Time: This story takes place right after the fight with Darth
Maul
Obi-Wan went to Qui-Gon. He knelt beside his Master, hoping
beyond hope that he was still alive. The lightsaber had gone
through his master. Obi-Wan knew his Master would die soon.
The older man blinked, once, then twice. His mouth began to
move. Obi-wan moved even closer, until he could feel the breath
of the older man upon him. "It feels different this time."
"What feels different?"
"Death."
"You can't die Master! You can't!" Obi-wan said, as if he
could will his Master into living.
"It's too late to stop it."
There was a light, a bright light. Suddenly the man that
Obi-Wan knew better then himself changed.
A new man looked up to Obi-Wan. He had dark brown eyes. His
hair was darker, curling along his shoulders in soft waves.
"Who are you? What have you done to Qui-Gon?" Obi-Wan demanded.
"I am the one you know as Qui-Gon." Even the voice was
different, the accent had changed.
Obi-Wan's mind filled with questions. "What happened to you?
Why do you look different?"
"Regeneration. I regenerated."
"If you regenerated, that means your a Timelord," Obi-wan
gasped. "Timelords aren't allowed to be a Jedi!"
"I know that." Qui-Gon sat up. "I didn't want you to find out
this way."
"It was always said that a Timelord would be too powerful if he
became a Jedi. You're nothing like the Timelords of legend."
"Disappointed?"
"I'm relieved you're alive, Master." Obi-wan reached out,
touching his Master. In the man's smile, Obi-Wan could see his
old master.
Qui-Gon put his hand on top of Obi-Wan's. "I must leave you."
"Why? Why must you leave?"
As you said, it's against the code for a Timelord to be a Jedi.
It carries the death penalty."
"We don't have to tell anyone."
"I would think the Jedi Council would notice that my face has
changed." Qui-Gon took something from around his neck. It was
the chain there was a small whistle attached to the chain. His
master blew the whistle.
Obi-Wan watched in amazement as a blue box appeared where they
had been fighting. "What is this thing?"
"It's called a TARDIS," Qui-Gon explained. "My time here is
over. For your safety, I must leave."
"Master, why do you say for my safety?"
"You know the code as well as I do. The Padawan of a Timelord
Jedi suffers the same penalty as their Master." The brown eyes
were serious. "You mean too much to me for me to loose you."
"I will loose you if you leave Master," Obi-Wan pointed out.
"We will be apart, but we will still be together." The Timelord
got to his feet.
"Take me with you!" Obi-Wan insisted, he was surprised to see
that his master was now the same height as him.
"Your path lies here. You must train Anikan Skywalker to be a
Jedi. Promise me you will be his master."
"You know how I feel about him-he's a risk, dangerous."
Qui-Gon looked into Obi-Wan's eyes, his hand touching the
younger man's cheek. "If you can't do it for him. Can you do it
in remembrance of me?"
Obi-Wan nodded. "I will do it for you."
The young Jedi's lips where brushed by his Masters. "It's
time."
"Will I ever see you again?"
"When your training of Skywalker is finished, I will come back,
and we will be together," the Timelord promised. "Look into
your heart, you will know the answer."
Obi-Wan closed his eyes, he looked inward, trying to see the
future. He could see himself, he was older, the box returned.
The Timelord stepped out of the TARDIS. The first thing he said
to him was: "Do you still want to come with me?"
"Yes, I do."
"The wait's been long. Perhaps too long." Qui-Gon pointed out.
"You don't have to come."
"I'm ready," was all that he said.
Obi-Wan opened his eyes, he was back in the present. "The Force
tells me it will be many years before you come back to me."
"But I will come back. If you can, wait for me." The unfamiliar
russet eyes looked at him as if trying to read the answer in
his eyes.
"I will wait," the younger man vowed.
The Timelord kissed his young charge, deeply, as if this would
be the last time he ever saw him.
There was a noise behind Obi-Wan. Qui-Gon pulled away from the
younger man. "I must go now." The younger Jedi watched his
master go to the TARDIS, take a key from his belt, and unlock
the door.
"I love you."
Qui-Gon looked at his padawan with regret. "I love you too."
Then the Timelord slipped into his TARDIS. There was a loud
groaning sound, and the TARDIS dematerialized.
Captain Panaka came up to the Jedi, followed by several guards.
"Where is Qui-Gon?"
"He was killed by Darth Maul." Obi-Wan matter-of-factly.
"Where is his body?"
"It vanished, just like any Jedi's would." Obi-Wan stared into
the space where the TARDIS had been. His lover had left him,
but he would return...someday. The Force had promised him.
